A root canal is a dental procedure that removes infected or damaged tissue (called pulp) from inside a tooth. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When it becomes inflamed or infected—due to decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures—it can lead to intense pain and serious complications.

Will a Root Canal Hurt?

Modern root canals are not painful. In fact, most patients say they feel instant relief after the infected tissue is removed. With today’s technology and numbing techniques, the procedure is virtually pain-free and often completed in a single visit.

After the procedure, you may feel some mild soreness or sensitivity, which typically resolves within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient for recovery.

How Long Does an Emergency Root Canal Take?

A standard root canal typically takes about 60–90 minutes. More complex cases (such as back molars with multiple roots) may take longer or require two visits.
